Hawaii Reports Travel Is Up |
| In a recent issue of TravelAge West, the state Dept. of Business, Economic Development and Tourism reported that in April 2003, the number of visitors arriving on domestic flights rose 12.2 % compared to the same month in 2002. Overall, during the first four months of 2003, domestic arrivals were up 3.4 % compared to the same period last year. |

Limited Entry Into The US |

Beginning August 1, 2003, many applicants seeking a visa
to the U.S. must have a face-to-face interview at a U.S. embassy or
consulate abroad. Most travelers from Canada and Europe will not be
affected, but many potential tourists from Latin America, China, Taiwan, the
Middle East and Africa will need to be seen in person. This change has been
prompted in part by national security concerns, said Kelly Shannon, a
spokeswoman with the State Department's Bureau of Consular Affairs.

The Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday, August 5th that the growth in corporate profits is picking up momentum. In the second quarter 2003, among the companies that are tracked by Dow Jones, the average net income has risen 63%. Presently, the net income levels are approaching historic highs, just short of what was recorded when the economy was booming during the second quarter of 2000. The Journal notes that if the profit improvement is sustained throughout the coming months, we would be seeing a much stronger economic recovery, one that many economists are now predicting. |

The combined attendance of Travel Agents from the three events was close to 1000 agents! Tahiti Tourisme did a total of six presentations, four of which were for Vacation.com agents. |

The Tu Moana and Tia Moana have launched their 7-day,
6-night itineraries which cruise through the lagoons of Bora Bora, Taha'a,
Raiatea and Huahine. There are just four ocean crossings, each no more than
2 and a half hours in duration. They depart in the early hours of the
morning to offer maximum comfort and for an arrival in time for sunrise. The
remainder of their boutique lagoon cruise is spent gliding across calm
lagoons.

Towards the end of this month, on the evening of August 27th, we will be able to witness the closest approach of Mars to Earth in almost 60,000 years! The Los Angeles Times noted in their Sunday edition that 'Tahiti will be roughly the closest spot to Mars during the event', quote taken from Bruce Betts, an LA based scientist with the Planetary Society. At 2:51 a.m. Pacific time on August 27 (that's 11:51 p.m. August 26th for those of you in Tahiti!), Earth and Mars will swing right by each other with the Earth near its farthest point from the sun and Mars at its closest. |
